Carrier, impact and return rollers explained

A belt conveyor uses three main kinds of roller. They look similar, but each one is built for a different job and a different place on the conveyor.

Carrier rollers – the loaded top run

Carrier rollers (also called carrier idlers or troughing idlers) carry the belt and the material on the top run. They are plain steel tubes with a bearing and seal in each end, and they make up most of the rollers on a conveyor. Our carrier rollers have steel pipe to EN 10219 and sealed deep-groove bearings.

Impact rollers – under the loading point

Where material drops onto the belt – at loading chutes, transfer points and crusher discharges – the falling material hits the belt hard. Impact rollers have vulcanised NBR rubber rings around a steel core. The rubber absorbs the shock, protecting the belt and the bearings. You recognise them by the row of thick rubber rings along the full length.

Return rollers – the empty return run

On the way back, the belt is empty and runs upside down, with its dirty carrying side facing the rollers. Return rollers with rubber discs reduce contact with the belt and help shed carry-back material. In our design, groups of flat discs sit at the ends and pointed cleaning discs in the middle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a carrier roller in the return position?

Physically it often fits, but a plain carrier roller on the return run collects sticky carry-back material. Rubber-disc return rollers are made for that position.

Do impact rollers need a different frame?

Impact rollers are usually mounted in impact idler frames under the loading zone. Check the shaft diameter, shaft ends and overall length against your frame before ordering.

Are CAD models available for all three types?

Yes. Every standard carrier, impact and return roller has free STEP, IGES and STL files for both shaft versions.

Need rollers?

Every standard roller has a published price and free STEP / IGES / STL files. Add it to the cart for an instant indicative quote; an engineer sends the official quote within 2 working days.
